What To Do on the First Day of Work

When you get a new job, going in on the first day of work can be a bit intimidating. Many people in this situation and of making mistakes that help form negative impressions that last throughout their careers. If you find yourself about to embark on your first day of work, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Dress Appropriately

Before you head into work for the first day, you need to make sure that you are dressed appropriately. Do a little bit of homework to find out the appropriate way to dress in your new corporate culture. You don't want to wear a three-piece suit to work if everyone else is in jeans and a polo shirt. At the same time, you don't want to under-dress for the job either.

Be Calm and Collected

Almost everyone gets a little bit nervous when they head into work for the first day of a new job. If you are starting to get nervous, don't allow yourself to show it too badly. Regardless of whether you're taking a psychometric exam, filling out paperwork, or meeting your new manager, try to stay calm and collected. If you are acting too nervously, it will be evident.

Model the Culture

While it is important to be yourself in a situation, you need to try to model the corporate culture that is already in place. If everyone is pretty laid back, you don't need to go over the top with formality. If you can mirror the behaviors of the people that you meet to a certain extent, this will help you fit in better. As you get a feel for how the culture works, then you can implement some of your own attitude and behaviors. Just try not to be too different on your first day on the job.

Show Your Skills and Work Ethic

There's nothing wrong with eating right to work on your first day and showing people what you can do. You want to set a positive impression as far as how you conduct yourself on the job, and what you can bring to the table. Be willing to work hard and pay close attention to detail.

The first day on the job can be very intimidating, but if you will keep some of these tips in mind, you should be able to get through without any major problems along the way.
