A sales job is not for the faint-hearted. It is one of the toughest as well as one of the most rewarding careers. In the last few years, the scope of sales job has also expanded to newer industries. Even technology firms have started hiring salespeople to assist them in selling their products/services to potential customers. Things may look for people in this profile, however, we cannot deny the truth that cracking a sales interview is not easy. No company wants to make the mistake of hiring bad sales people as the function is directly related to its revenue. However, a good salesperson will agree that nothing would be a better proof of one’s selling abilities than acing the interview for a sales position?

To help you prepare better, outlined below are a few tips that will help you seal the deal in your next sales job interview:

1. Do extensive research:

Research is important and shouldn’t be neglected. Take out some time to do extensive research on the company you are about to interview at. Understand what products/services it sells. Demonstrate this knowledge during the interview. It will help convince the interviewer that you know very well what the company is all about and will be able to communicate the same to the target market in a convincing manner.

Additionally, you should also keep yourself updated with what’s going on in your industry. Things such as relevant data, sales cycles and latest trends should be on your tips. Read up blogs and magazines related to your field, dig out press releases and gather as much information as possible. It will help you prepare the perfect sales pitch to impress the interviewer.

2. Ask yourself this question:

We often hear this phrase, ‘Don’t preach what you don’t practice.’ The same applies to sales also. Once you know the product/service well, ask yourself whether you would buy it or not. Don’t include information that may be confidential to your past employers. Not only can that get you into legal trouble but also give a bad impression to your prospective employers. The safest and best way to showcase your talent is by sharing specific goals that you have achieved in the past.

Additionally, it would be great if you could have someone else vouch for you especially, if that someone is an old client of yours. This will show that you know how to keep your clients happy and build strong relationships with them.

4. Show them that you want the job:

Job seekers sometimes focus way too much on selling their skills and forget to tell the employers that they are genuinely interested in working with them. Employers don’t ask this but you have to find out ways to put across the message to them.

Therefore, don’t just sit at home and wait for the employer’s response after the interview. Send an email to the interviewer thanking him/her for meeting with you and inquiring about the status of your candidature. The first follow-up mail should ideally reach within 24 hours of appearing for the interview.Make sure to follow up effectively so that you don’t look desperate.
